Pakistan: Qandeel Baloch's killer acquitted
His brother, who was sentenced to life in Pakistan for the
alleged slanderous murder of social celebrity Qandeel Baloch, has also been
acquitted by a court after the victim's parents were pardoned under Islamic law.
Muhammad Wasim was arrested in this case in the year 2016.
Waseem had admitted that he first drugged his sister, 26-year-old Fauzia Azim,
known as Qandeel Baloch, and then strangled her to death as she was allegedly
sharing an objectionable picture on social media and defamed the family's
honour. was hurting.
Wasim, the lone accused in the case, was sentenced to life
imprisonment by the trial court in the year 2019, while the other suspects were
acquitted for lack of evidence. These include Baloch's younger brother Aslam
Shaheen, cousin Haq Nawaz and Mufti Abdul Kavi. Wasim later challenged this
sentence in the High Court.
While Baloch's parents forgave Wasim on Monday, they also
retracted the earlier statement against Wasim, the court official said.
Baloch's parents had earlier said in a statement before the police that Wasim
was involved in the murder of their daughter, they said.
"Justice Sohail Nasir of Multan Bench of Lahore High
Court pronounced this judgment after prosecution witnesses switched sides and
Qandeel's legal heir (his parents) granted pardon," the official said. It
is worth noting that every year in Pakistan, about 1000 women are murdered by
their relatives for the sake of false pride.
